Gypsum Reinforced Plaster Board (GRP) is a type of building material used in construction. It is made of a core of gypsum plaster, which is reinforced with fiberglass or other materials to provide additional strength and durability. The boards are commonly used in walls and ceilings for interior applications.
The gypsum plaster used in the core is a natural material composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate, also known as gypsum. It is mixed with water and other additives to create a thick, slurry-like substance that is poured into a mold to create the desired shape and size of the board.
1. Fire resistance
Due to the fact that gypsum itself is a refractory material, gypsum boards can also withstand fire for up to 4 hours. The reason behind this is the presence of water in the gypsum quotation. When water comes into contact with fire, it begins to evaporate. It helps the gypsum board form a protective layer that helps prevent fires from spreading over a period of time.
2. Not easily combustible
When gypsum board comes into contact with fire, it begins a process called calcination. Calcination is the process of dehydration of gypsum board, helping it form an additional layer. It keeps the wall from burning for several hours and remains at room temperature at all times.
3. Acoustic characteristics
Gypsum board has an inherent degree of sound insulation. Compared to traditional walls of the same thickness, these walls are more effective. This is because they contain sound interruptions, reducing reverberation.
For example, gypsum boards with a thickness of about 60mm are as effective in sound insulation as brick and stone walls with a thickness of 85mm. Users can also choose to use sound-absorbing gypsum boards to further improve performance.
4. Thermal performance
Gypsum board contains water of crystallization. They also contain cavities, allowing users to achieve an appropriate balance between humidity and temperature. If you add fiberglass, it will further prevent fires, as fiberglass helps maintain the integrity of the board. Additional insulation materials serve as water vapor barriers to help control humidity in the room.
