Moisture resistant gypsum board is a gypsum panel with a water-repellent core and a moisture-resistant facing, made for bathrooms, kitchens, laundries, basements and other humid interiors. In short: it resists moisture and vapour, but it is not waterproof, and it only performs when the wall assembly around it includes a proper water barrier.
A standard gypsum panel absorbs water quickly and loses strength. A moisture resistant board adds wax emulsion, silicone or asphalt to the gypsum core and uses a water-resistant liner on the face and back. Under ASTM C1396, water-resistant gypsum board must show water absorption of no more than 5% after a two-hour immersion. Under EN 520, the equivalent designations are Type H1 (absorption ≤5%) and Type H2 (≤10%).
Buyers comparing quotes should ask one question first: which standard and which type is the mill claiming? A green or blue paper facing is a visual marker, not a performance grade. Two suppliers can both ship "green board" while one delivers 4% absorption and the other 9%.
Dry offices, air-conditioned corridors and standard internal partitions do not need a moisture resistant core. Specifying it everywhere adds cost without measurable benefit — and in wet rooms, relying on the board alone instead of a membrane is what causes most failures.

Fixing practice matters too: corrosion-resistant screws at roughly 200 mm centres in wet zones, a 10–13 mm gap above floor level to prevent wicking, and fastener heads sealed before tiling.
Every specification we issue is tied to a test method rather than a marketing claim. Panels are produced to ASTM C1396 or EN 520 and tested for water absorption (ASTM C473), flexural strength, nail pull and dimensional stability. Shipments can be supported with ISO 9001 factory certification, batch-level test reports, CE marking where required, and third-party inspection by SGS, BV or Intertek before loading. If a batch falls outside the agreed absorption limit, it does not ship — and you see the data that proves it.
No. It resists moisture and vapour but is not a waterproof membrane. Wet areas still require tiling, sealing or a waterproof coating.
