Green Board Drywall for Bathrooms and Kitchens: Specifications, Standards and Sourcing

Green board drywall is the trade name for moisture resistant gypsum board — the default backing panel for tile in bathrooms, kitchens and other wet areas. It is a substrate, not a waterproof barrier, and its performance depends on the standard it is made to.

What "Green Board" Actually Tells You

The green or blue facing identifies a moisture resistant core. It is a visual marker, not a performance grade. One supplier's green board may show 4% water absorption; another's may show 9%. Specification must therefore reference a standard — ASTM C1396 water-resistant gypsum board, EN 520 Type H1/H2, or AS/NZS 2588 — and the test report behind it.

Build-Up That Works in Wet Areas

Board, membrane and joint treatment work as one system. A reliable specification is: moisture resistant board mechanically fixed at reduced centres in wet zones, joints treated with setting compound, cut edges and fastener heads sealed, then a bonded liquid or sheet membrane applied before tiling. Leave out any element and the assembly is no longer what it claims to be.

Where Installations Fail

Projects we have supplied across the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Australia fail for the same three reasons: board installed directly in a shower with no membrane, unsealed cut edges, and standard compound used where a setting compound was required. None of these are product defects, and all of them are avoidable with a written build-up and a pre-tile inspection.

Verification and Supply

Panels are produced to ASTM C1396 or EN 520 and tested for water absorption (ASTM C473), flexural strength, nail pull and surface burning characteristics. Documentation supports ISO 9001 factory certification, CE marking where applicable, batch test reports and pre-shipment inspection by SGS, BV or Intertek. Pre-production samples can be issued so your tiling contractor can test adhesive performance on the actual panel before mass production begins.
