Fire Rated Gypsum Board Type X: Ratings, Standards and Specification Guide

Fire rated gypsum board Type X is a gypsum panel formulated with glass fibres and other additives so that it performs substantially better than standard board when exposed to fire. It is the base component of rated partitions, ceilings and shaft walls.

What "Type X" Actually Means

Type X is a defined designation, not a marketing term. Under ASTM C1396, a Type X gypsum board must achieve a fire resistance rating of not less than one hour when tested in a specified assembly to ASTM E119. Under EN 520, the comparable designation is Type F, typically used in systems classified to EN 13501-1. GB/T 9775 defines the equivalent grades for the Chinese market.

The rating belongs to the assembly, not the panel. Board, studs, insulation, fastening pattern and joint treatment all contribute. Any supplier claiming a bare panel is "2-hour fire rated" is misstating the standard.

Common defects we record are joints aligned across layers, under-specified fasteners and unsealed perimeter gaps — installation issues, not board issues, but they void the rating just the same.

Verification and Documentation

Panels are produced to ASTM C1396 Type X, EN 520 Type F or GB/T 9775, from factories operating under ISO 9001. Fire test reports from accredited laboratories are available for the assemblies we support, together with material data sheets and installation manuals. Where a proprietary tested design applies, its instructions govern — and if our panel is not listed in the assembly your project requires, we say so before the order rather than after delivery.

Is Type X board fireproof?

No building material is fireproof. Type X board delays fire spread and structural failure for a defined period, measured in a tested assembly.

Can Type X be used in wet areas?

Yes. Boards combining a moisture resistant core with a fire rated core are available.

Does thicker board always mean a higher rating?

Not automatically. The rating depends on the complete assembly tested to ASTM E119.

Can I substitute another brand of the same thickness?
