A fire rated drywall wall is only as good as the assembly it forms. The same board can deliver a one-hour or a two-hour rating depending on layers, thickness, framing, insulation and fastening. The rating is a property of the system — never of the panel alone.

Moving from a one-hour to a two-hour assembly roughly doubles board consumption over the same wall area, plus extra labour, longer screws and additional joint treatment. On a large project that is a real budget line. The rating should come from the fire strategy first, and the cheapest tested assembly that satisfies it should then be selected — not the other way round.
Having supported contractors through fire inspections on residential towers, hotels and warehouses, we see the same defects repeatedly: joints lining up across layers, insufficient fastener spacing at board edges, and unsealed perimeter gaps. None of these were board defects. All of them invalidated the tested design. The practical lesson is that installation discipline, not panel selection, decides whether the wall you built matches the wall that was tested.
Our assembly guidance references published listings and accredited laboratory test data, including ASTM E119 designs and EN 13501-1 classifications. Where a local code or a proprietary design is more specific, that document governs. Where a single-layer design already meets the requirement, we will say so — recommending unnecessary double-layering is not good service.
