How to Install Fire Rated Gypsum Board: Layering, Joint Treatment and Inspection Checklist

Correct fire rated gypsum board installation is a discipline of sequence and detail. A tested assembly loses its rating when layers are not staggered, fasteners are under-specified, or perimeter joints are left open — even though the correct board was used.

Step 1 — Confirm the Tested Design Before Starting

Before any panel is fixed, confirm in writing: board type and thickness, number of layers, stud type and spacing, insulation type and density, fastener type and spacing, and joint treatment. The installation must reproduce the design that was tested. Any deviation requires re-approval by the fire engineer, not a verbal agreement on site.

Step 2 — Fix the Base Layer

  • Apply the base layer with joints centred on studs, not aligned with the outer layer.
  • Fastener spacing: typically 150–200 mm at board edges, 300 mm at intermediate supports.
  • Set fastener heads just below the surface without breaking the core.

Step 3 — Apply the Outer Layer

Offset outer-layer joints from base-layer joints by at least one stud space. Do not fasten the outer layer into the same stud line as the adjoining board's edge. On walls, long edges are generally run horizontally in tested designs.

Step 4 — Treat Joints and Perimeter

Embed tape in setting-type compound at every joint. Seal head-of-wall, floor and vertical abutments with the specified firestop system or approved sealant. Head-of-wall detailing is the single most frequently cited defect during inspection.
