MOISTURE-AWARE / INTERIOR USE
Moisture Resistant Gypsum Board
Moisture Resistance Is Not the Same as Waterproofing
Moisture resistant gypsum board is considered for interior spaces subject to intermittent humidity, such as certain kitchens, utility rooms and suitably detailed bathroom zones. The moisture resistance rating should be established by the exact product test report, not inferred from a green facing alone.
Buyer focus: Before ordering, confirm product type, construction details and document-specific performance. Dimensions and optional classifications shown here require individual quotation and verification.
Map the room into actual exposure zones
A humid room can contain several different conditions: dry painted wall areas, occasional splash zones, and direct shower or bath exposure. The lining behind tiles in wet zones may require a proprietary wet-area substrate and waterproof membrane. Water-resistant or moisture-resistant board alone must never be marketed as a substitute for a designed waterproofing system.
Why open joints and service holes are vulnerable
Moisture can enter around unsealed cut edges, pipe penetrations, electrical boxes and floor-to-wall interfaces. Designers should detail compatible jointing materials, flexible perimeter seals and the required waterproofing membrane where appropriate. A high-performance face does not compensate for poor workmanship at a shower penetration.
Ask for a defined test rather than a color
Under EN 520, gypsum plasterboards may have additional properties designated by type codes; the precise moisture-related type should be verified against the board declaration. Under ASTM specifications, different gypsum board categories exist for defined end uses. Request the test method, acceptance criteria, laboratory report and exact board trade code. Surface color alone is not a performance classification.
Control conditions before closing the wall
Do not conceal wet insulation, leaking pipes or damp framing behind new boards. Allow substrates and joints to dry as required, and provide the ventilation demanded by the room design. Materials held in humid warehouses before installation can arrive compromised even if the original factory batch passed inspection.
Technical Selection Checklist
Use this checklist to turn a general inquiry into a buildable and comparable purchase specification.
| Item | What to confirm | Buyer action |
|---|---|---|
| Exposure category | Intermittent humidity versus splash or direct water | Mark wet zones on the architectural drawing |
| Test documentation | Declared moisture-related classification and test report | Confirm report identity and validity |
| System details | Joints, penetrations, membrane and sealant | Request manufacturer-approved assembly detail |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is green gypsum board waterproof?
No. Green is a common visual convention, not proof of waterproofing, and color systems vary by manufacturer.
Can moisture resistant board be used behind shower tiles?
Only when the complete specified wet-area assembly permits it. Do not assume suitability from a generic moisture-resistant label.
Request a Project-Based Quotation
Send your required board type, dimensions, quantities, destination market and the applicable building-system specification. For performance-critical projects, include the test or assembly reference. We can then review the requested specification and confirm availability, testing documents and export packing details before pricing.
