FIRE DESIGN / TESTED ASSEMBLIES
Fire Resistant Gypsum Board
A Fire-Rated Wall Is an Assembly, Not a Single Board
Fire resistant gypsum board is selected as a component of partitions, shaft walls and floor-ceiling constructions that need a defined fire-resistance design. A board label such as Type F or Type X does not by itself establish a one-hour or two-hour rating for an untested wall.
Buyer focus: Before ordering, confirm product type, construction details and document-specific performance. Dimensions and optional classifications shown here require individual quotation and verification.
Board classification and wall rating are different
European EN 520 Type F terminology and North American Type X terminology belong to different technical frameworks. They must not be presented as automatic equivalents. For a specified fire-resistance duration, locate the complete tested design including framing profile, stud spacing, layer count, board orientation, joint treatment, insulation and fixings. The project authority must accept the selected assembly.
Small substitutions can invalidate a tested design
Changing 15.9 mm board to a nominally similar metric thickness, using a different core type, altering the screw pattern or reducing the number of board layers may mean the proposed construction no longer matches the published rating. Even service penetrations, socket boxes and head-of-wall details need an approved fire-stopping solution. Do not substitute components purely on a price-per-sheet basis.
What documentation importers should request
Ask for a board data sheet, applicable product standard, verified fire-related classification and the relevant assembly test or listing. Request batch labeling and traceability documents. When customers request an hourly rating, ask for the design number or approved fire test report rather than asserting that the gypsum board itself has that rating.
Purchasing and site-delivery implications
Project buyers should order the correct board thickness and layer quantities for the specified assembly, including allowance for waste. Distinguish ordinary gypsum sheets from rated-system components in packaging and stock codes, so installers cannot unknowingly exchange them.
Technical Selection Checklist
Use this checklist to turn a general inquiry into a buildable and comparable purchase specification.
| Item | What to confirm | Buyer action |
|---|---|---|
| Fire-related board type | Type F, Type X or other designated type | Verify manufacturer documentation |
| Required wall performance | Project-required duration and jurisdiction | Ask for tested assembly reference |
| Installation configuration | Studs, layers, screws, joints and penetrations | Match all key details to approved design |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a fire resistant board provide a two-hour rating by itself?
No. Fire-resistance time is established for an appropriate tested wall or ceiling assembly.
Is a 12 mm board automatically Type X?
No. A nominal thickness cannot establish Type X compliance; use the applicable classification and test documents.
Request a Project-Based Quotation
Send your required board type, dimensions, quantities, destination market and the applicable building-system specification. For performance-critical projects, include the test or assembly reference. We can then review the requested specification and confirm availability, testing documents and export packing details before pricing.
