ACOUSTIC DESIGN / PARTITION SYSTEM
Acoustic Gypsum Board
Sound Insulation Is a Wall-System Result
Acoustic gypsum board can be part of a multi-layer lining designed to reduce sound transmission between rooms. The performance that matters to a hotel, office or apartment project is the tested partition rating and its on-site construction quality—not a decibel value printed on a single sheet.
Buyer focus: Before ordering, confirm product type, construction details and document-specific performance. Dimensions and optional classifications shown here require individual quotation and verification.
STC and Rw figures need a matching test assembly
STC is commonly used in North American airborne sound testing and Rw is a weighted sound reduction index used in many other markets. Their values are not simple labels for the board alone. Compare results only after checking stud geometry, board layers, insulation type, cavity depth, seals and laboratory test reference.
Mass, cavity and decoupling have different jobs
Additional approved lining mass may improve airborne sound isolation; cavity absorptive material can influence resonance; separated or resilient framing can reduce mechanical transmission. Adding insulation to an otherwise unchanged wall does not guarantee a specific overall rating. A system detail should account for the complete arrangement.
The weakest junction can dominate real-world results
Small unsealed gaps at the floor track, perimeter, penetrations, sockets or above suspended ceilings can undermine a well-designed partition. Ask how acoustic sealant, door-frame junctions and service openings will be handled. Flanking transmission through the ceiling void or adjacent structure may also bypass the wall itself.
Bulk purchasers should buy to a tested schedule
Provide the intended rating, partition drawing, number of board layers, wall height and whether the framing is single- or double-stud. Ask for the actual acoustic system report; avoid specifying a claimed 50 dB or 60 dB result where no corresponding test exists.
Technical Selection Checklist
Use this checklist to turn a general inquiry into a buildable and comparable purchase specification.
| Item | What to confirm | Buyer action |
|---|---|---|
| Target performance | STC, Rw or project-specific criterion | Identify governing standard and lab report |
| Lining detail | Board layers and nominal thickness | Check exact product compatibility |
| Leakage control | Perimeter sealing, doors, penetrations | Request junction details |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does soundproof gypsum board block all noise?
No. Sound insulation varies with frequency, partition design, workmanship and flanking paths.
Can a board supplier guarantee an STC rating from board data alone?
No. The rating should relate to a defined tested construction.
Request a Project-Based Quotation
Send your required board type, dimensions, quantities, destination market and the applicable building-system specification. For performance-critical projects, include the test or assembly reference. We can then review the requested specification and confirm availability, testing documents and export packing details before pricing.
