JOINT QUALITY / DECORATION
Tapered Edge Gypsum Board
Why Painted Walls Show Seams After Installation
On large, brightly lit walls, even a structurally sound gypsum lining can display visible joint bands after painting. The board edge, face-paper texture, screw recess and finishing specification influence whether the final appearance meets the architect’s expectation.
Buyer focus: Before ordering, confirm product type, construction details and document-specific performance. Dimensions and optional classifications shown here require individual quotation and verification.
Tapered edges are designed to receive joint treatment
A standard recessed long edge helps accommodate paper or approved joint tape and compound. Short butt joints may need wider feathering because they lack a tapered recess. Buyers should specify the edge form in the purchase order; a board of the correct thickness but wrong edge profile can change finishing labour and appearance.
Screw heads should be seated, not torn through
If the installer drives a screw through the paper face, its holding contribution can be compromised. Fastener type, spacing and setting are determined by the chosen wall or ceiling system. High screw heads can remain visible; overdriven heads require correction rather than simply burying the defect under extra compound.
Specify the finish level and lighting environment together
North American guidance on gypsum panel finishing describes different levels of finish depending on decoration and expectations. For critical lighting or certain glossy finishes, a higher treatment level may be appropriate. A finish recommendation cannot be inferred from product smoothness alone; the architect should set the acceptance standard before pricing.
Batch samples should include finishing trials
When qualifying a new board, create a sample bay using the proposed joint tape, compound, primer and paint system. Observe the dried surface under the intended lighting angle, not just front-on showroom light. A jointing mock-up can uncover variations that do not appear in a basic surface photograph.
Technical Selection Checklist
Use this checklist to turn a general inquiry into a buildable and comparable purchase specification.
| Item | What to confirm | Buyer action |
|---|---|---|
| Board edge | Tapered long edge / end-edge treatment | Photograph factory and site cut edges |
| Finishing materials | Tape, compounds, primer, paint | Build a compatible finishing mock-up |
| Appearance criterion | Defined finish level and lighting | Agree a visible benchmark panel |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a tapered edge the same as a bevel edge?
Not necessarily. Confirm the exact edge geometry rather than relying on a generic sales label.
Does Level 5 mean a board has zero visual defects?
No. It refers to a specified finishing process and still depends on substrate, lighting and workmanship.
Request a Project-Based Quotation
Send your required board type, dimensions, quantities, destination market and the applicable building-system specification. For performance-critical projects, include the test or assembly reference. We can then review the requested specification and confirm availability, testing documents and export packing details before pricing.
