DURABILITY / PUBLIC INTERIORS
Impact Resistant Gypsum Board
High-Traffic Walls Need a Defined Impact Requirement
In schools, healthcare buildings, offices and hotel corridors, wall surfaces may be struck by bags, equipment, carts and frequent cleaning operations. Higher-durability gypsum panels can be considered, but the terms impact resistant and abuse resistant should be supported by the exact product test report.
Buyer focus: Before ordering, confirm product type, construction details and document-specific performance. Dimensions and optional classifications shown here require individual quotation and verification.
Abrasion, indentation and impact are not the same
A wall can be scratched by a trolley, dented by a door handle or struck by a concentrated load. These are different damage modes. ASTM C1629 provides classification methods for specific abuse- and impact-related properties. Ask which properties were tested and the associated classifications; one marketing adjective cannot substitute for multiple test results.
Board grade will not protect every vulnerable location
Even an enhanced board can suffer local damage where a door repeatedly hits the wall or wheeled equipment catches a corner. Coordinate corner guards, skirting protection, door stops and appropriate fixing grounds in high-use areas. At door openings, consider the wall framing and local reinforcement.
Panel thickness and assembly matter together
Choosing a thicker ordinary board is not proof that it matches a purpose-designed high-impact panel. Likewise, adding a second board layer may change performance but cannot establish a tested classification without evidence. Match the product code to the abrasion and impact specification in the bill of quantities.
Procurement checkpoints before substitution
Ask whether the requested performance refers to surface abrasion, soft-body impact, hard-body impact or a broader project condition. Obtain an ASTM C1629 report or relevant local test, confirm the board facing and edge, and retain the approved sample for comparison with delivered stock.
Technical Selection Checklist
Use this checklist to turn a general inquiry into a buildable and comparable purchase specification.
| Item | What to confirm | Buyer action |
|---|---|---|
| Damage risk | Scratches, dents, door impact, wheeled traffic | Describe the service environment |
| Performance proof | Classification by relevant test property | Match report to board code |
| Protection details | Corners, doors, skirting and fixings | Check finish and accessory schedule |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is every dense gypsum board impact resistant?
No. Density alone does not establish a particular abuse- or impact-resistance test level.
Can standard gypsum board replace a specified abuse-resistant panel?
Only after the specifier reviews acceptable equivalence and required documented performance.
Request a Project-Based Quotation
Send your required board type, dimensions, quantities, destination market and the applicable building-system specification. For performance-critical projects, include the test or assembly reference. We can then review the requested specification and confirm availability, testing documents and export packing details before pricing.
