ARCHITECTURAL CURVES / DRYWALL
Flexible Gypsum Board
An Arch Requires a Verified Radius, Not Just a Thin Sheet
Curved partitions, reception desks and arched ceiling details can be finished with purpose-specified gypsum lining products. The achievable curvature depends on the exact panel, thickness, bending direction, moisture-conditioning method where permitted and supporting frame—not merely the architect’s rendered image.
Buyer focus: Before ordering, confirm product type, construction details and document-specific performance. Dimensions and optional classifications shown here require individual quotation and verification.
Always ask for the inside radius
Curved surfaces are defined by radius rather than an informal description such as gently curved. The minimum permitted radius should come from the individual board manufacturer’s instructions. A lower radius generally creates more severe bending demands; forced bending can crack the face paper or core.
The support frame determines the visible curve
Curved tracks and closer stud or furring supports may be needed to avoid flat spots. A large sheet fixed to sparse straight members will not produce a smooth continuous arc. The direction of sheet bending, board orientation and number of layers must follow the approved construction method.
Joint placement affects post-decoration cracking
Plan joints away from points of maximum curvature where practical, using the system guidance. Adjacent layers in multi-layer linings may require staggered joints. Inadequate fastening or shrinkage of finishing materials can create fine cracks across a visually prominent curve. A full-size trial section is often more useful than a tiny flat sample.
Make the curved-wall inquiry measurable
Send the plan radius, height, arc length, substrate details, intended finish and a sketch of internal/external corners. Ask the supplier for permitted bending information and a relevant installation detail. Standard boards should not be advertised as flexible unless they are approved for the proposed curvature.
Technical Selection Checklist
Use this checklist to turn a general inquiry into a buildable and comparable purchase specification.
| Item | What to confirm | Buyer action |
|---|---|---|
| Geometry | Inside radius, arc length, wall height | Provide dimensioned CAD/section |
| Board selection | Product, thickness, bend orientation | Request allowable radius data |
| Fixing layout | Curved track, centres, layers, joints | Check installation detail or mock-up |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can any thin gypsum board be bent into an arch?
No. Bending suitability and the permitted radius are product- and system-specific.
Is wet-bending always allowed?
No. Do not wet or precondition a panel unless the relevant product instructions permit it.
Request a Project-Based Quotation
Send your required board type, dimensions, quantities, destination market and the applicable building-system specification. For performance-critical projects, include the test or assembly reference. We can then review the requested specification and confirm availability, testing documents and export packing details before pricing.
